The industry chosen is the eye care industry, which is a sector of the private health care industry. The sub-sector of the eye care sector which has been selected is the retail dispensing of eye glasses and contact lenses. This sub-sector is a "hybrid" since it involves both retail and services.

To enter this sub-sector, it is planned to establish a chain of retail outlets where customers can choose from a boutique of services. The tentative name for this chain will be "I.C. Now."

A general overview of the sub-sector is necessary at this point. There are three classes of credentialed professionals who could be involved with the eventual business schema: A) Optometrists (doctors of optometry, also known as O.D.'s); B)

Ophthalmologists; and C) Dispensing Opticians.

Although they may overlap, the three professional areas have well-defined duties and limitations. The Optometrist examines people's eyes (using a wide variety of equipment and techniques to diagnose vision problems and eye diseases).

Optometrists prescribe eyeglasses and contact lenses, and provide vision therapy and low vision rehabilitation. Opthalmalogists are physicians who perform eye surgery, and diagnose and treat eye diseases and injuries. Similar to optometrists, they also examine eyes and prescribe eyeglasses and contact lenses.
