This is an excerpt from the paper...

This paper presents five separate essays, each of which presents a review of a study which has examined organizational turnover and absenteeism and various factors affecting these variables. The emphasis in each essay is upon the core theoretical postulates of the article and the key research questions that it addresses.

ARTICLE: Porter, L. & Steers, R.M. (1973). Organizational work and personal factors in employee turnover and absenteeism. Psychological Bulletin, 80(2), 151-176.

This article presents a critical examination of research conducted from 1961 to 1973 on relationships between job satisfaction, turnover, and absenteeism in organizational and industrial settings. The key research question addressed via the review is: To what extent, and in what way, does an employee's level of job satisfaction influence turnover and absenteeism behavior?

Their examination of the literature led Porter and Steers (1973) to conclude that, in general, the existing research indicated that job satisfaction was inversely related to turnover and absenteeism. The existing research supported this view; however, the failure to find many shared correlates indicates that despite this relationship, factors contributive to absenteeism are not necessarily contributive to turnover--and vice versa. In other words, the relationships involved in absenteeism and turnover and more complex that might be thought by merely noting that there is systematic variance between the two factors. Essay 3 ARTICLE: Hedges, J.N. (1973). Absence from work -- a look at some national data. Monthly Labor Review, July, 24-30. The key theoretical notion of Hedges' study is that there is the possibility that much of the variance in organizational absenteeism that is being attributed to personal factors such as illness or family responsibilities might in fact be due to job dissatisfaction. In an effort to test this theoretical perspective, Hedges analyzed national survey data collected for the Bureau of Labor Statistics by the Bureau of the Census. Data analysis was directed towa
