This research examines the performance of the agriculture sector of the Ethiopian economy during the 40year 19511990 time period. The purpose of this examination is to develop an answer to the question: What has been the impact on Ethiopian development policy on the agricultural sector?

AGRICULTURAL PERFORMANCE IN ETHIOPIA:19511990

The rate of growth of agricultural production within an economy is not particularly meaningful, until it is compared with other salient factors. In the case of Ethiopia, such salient factors include (1) the rate of population growth, (2) the level of food import dependency, and (3) agriculture as a proportion of gross domestic product.

The rate of growth in agricultural production for the 19511990 time period is compared to the country's population growth rate in Chart 1, which may be found on the following page. A major problem in the analysis of economic performance of any kind in Ethiopia is the absence of reliable data. Until 1984, as an example, it had been assumed that the country's population was growing at an annual rate of 2.5 percent.1 In that year, the first census in Ethiopia's history was conducted, and both the level of the population, and the rate of population growth turned out to be much higher than had been previously estimated.
