The patient reviewed here, under the pseudonym of Jack, is currently a Ph.D. candidate at a major research institution in the area. He is 28 years old, single at the moment, and describes himself as "unable to have a lasting or intimate relationship with anyone." Jack sought treatment because of late he had been feeling extraordinarily anxious and discontent about both his life and his career path.The problem that Jack seems to be facing is one of bewilderment about being in school at his age. He feels that life is passing him by, but since he had previously changed careers in midstream, he feels compelled to stick this one out, whatever the cost. Jack's dissatisfaction with his personal and professional life is becoming more and more apparent in his conscious personality, often making him irritable, tense, and unable to get any of the assigned work accomplished a dangerous thing as he says, "for someone so close to the doctoral qualifying examinations." Jack was born in a medium sized, heavily working class town in the Midwest. Neither of his parents were educated beyond the high school diploma, but from a very early age Jack was given every possible opportunity to learn and read. In fact, he had already mastered the alphabet and elementary reading exercises before he went to kindergarten. Yet, it seems, although he was intellectually superior to his classmates, he quickly learned that in order to get along with them, he would have to "play me
