The purpose of this paper is to review the literature on compensatory education emphasizing those studies which have examined the efficacy of compensatory education programs for the disadvantaged. The overall research purpose may be broken down as an attempt to answer the following questions:

classrooms in 37 New York City Schools. Funded under Chapter 1 of the Eduction Consolidation and Improvement Act, the program includes 23 teacher specialists and a social worker and psychologist for every 120 students. Classroom staff included a teacher, an educational assistant, and a family assistant. Children attended half-day sessions in Project Giant Step with a capacity for 20 students per classroom. However, the average daily attendance was 10.5. Evaluation of the program showed that students were meeting achievement levels set by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. The activities children engaged in were found to be highly encouraging of peer interaction. However, attendance was found to be low. Recommendations An additional purpose of the thesis alternative was to review the literature on recommendations for improving compensatory eduction programs. In this regard, Richardson (1988) has called for improvement through the constant maintenance of an "upbeat" classroom atmosphere.
