The first major antitrust legislation enacted in the United States was the Sherman Antitrust Act in 1890.11 The first section of this act deals with contracts, combinations, and consipracies in restraint of trade. This act is the basic antitrust legislation for the country, and declares illegal "every contract, combination in the form of trust or otherwise, or conspiracy, in restraint of trade or commerce among the several states, or with foreign nations."12 The second section of the act deals with monopolies and with conspiracies to monopolize commerce.
