Elementary school education as a profession
This is an excerpt from the paper...
This paper studies elementary school education as a profession, with particular emphasis on teaching in New York state. Teaching young children requires a very particular set of qualifications, including the temperament and personality required for working with elementary-age youngsters. Teaching has traditionally been an occupation with relatively low pay and somewhat reduced prestige. However, as society has come to recognize the importance of quality education, teachers are beginning to receive both the pay and the respect this difficult, demanding, and often rewarding profession deserves. The U.S. Department of Labor observes, "What children learn and experience during their early years can shape their views of themselves and the world, and affect later success or failure in school, work, and their personal lives" (150). For the majority of children in today's society, elementary school is not their first experience with the educational process; most have already been enrolled in some type of preschool program before entering first grade. However, Glen W. Cutlip and Robert J. Shockley note that at least 10 percent of all children begin formal schooling at the elementary school level (79). Cutlip and Shockley note that, while a substantial portion of the elementary school curriculum focuses on reading, writing, and mathematics, "teaching at this level is not so much about the basic skills as it is about motivating students" (80).
