REVIEW OF RELEVANT LITERATURE
Introduction
As indicated in the preceding section, the research performed for the proposed study will rely on data available in the literature. Thus, the literature directly covering the use of solitary confinementits history, its effectiveness as a prison management tool, and its psychological effects on prisonerswill be reviewed, presented, and assessed in the final thesis. In this proposal, literature is reviewed with respect to interpersonal communication, and the formation of adult social groups, each of which may be adversely affected by the imposition of solitary confinement on an individual. This literature will provide a basis for an understanding of the psychological effects of solitary confinement.
