Money isn't everything, but it is almost everything, especially if one is in the precarious position of not having enough of it. To say that money is security is literally true. To say that money is peace of mind is metaphorically true. There is a lot to be said for security and peace of mind in any situation. Trying to live without adequate money can cause many sleepless nights, not to mention anxiety-filled days. If such is the case, there is much to be said for frugality. A person can cut one's expenses to such an extent that having adequate money never becomes an issue. Living within one's means becomes much easier when one is willing to live a more simple, less consumer-driven life. Suppose, for the sake of argument and frugality, that a person were to attempt to live on the smallest amount of income possible. This author remembers reading an article in one of the tabloids about a former philosophy professor who gave up academia to live a simple, frugal life, without all the encumbrances of modern, angst-ridden life. He grew his own food, reused what consumables he could practicably reuse, and indulged in as few frills as possible. For him, the greatest enjoyment came to mean spending as little as possible for the greatest degree of pleasure. For example, he bought thrift store paperbacks in lieu of new bookstore hardbacks.
