Design Proposal on Anesthetics This constitutes a design proposal fo

This is an excerpt from the paper...

This constitutes a design proposal for research examining whether general anesthetic or local anesthetic is associated with differential recovery rates on six clinical indicators of post-operative recovery from elective gynecologic dilation and curettage. The proposal delineates the basic nature of the study in terms of statements regarding the study's general purpose and research problem. The background research and significance of the study is also delineated.

This delineation is followed by a review of pertinent research. On the basis of this review, conclusions are formulated regarding the effects of general versus local anesthesia for women undergoing dilation and curettage in ambulatory care facilities.

All variables and key terms used in the study are then defined; also, the conceptual foundations of the research are stipulated and hypotheses delineated. In addition, the proposal describes and discusses all of the methods and procedures to be used in both the collection and analysis of data. Methodological limitations restricting the generalizability of the research are also presented.

Do post-operative recovery rates of women undergoing elective dilation and curettage (D&C) significantly differ depending upon whether they are given a general or local anesthetic; and do these rates differ in relation to selected demographic and medical history variables? Examining for the answers to these question

. . .
Hypotheses A good deal of the research on anesthesia and D&C surgeries indicates that local anesthetics may be preferable to general anesthetics (Hurt, 1991; Loffer, 1987; Wetchler, 1982). Based on this research, the following statistical hypotheses are formulated for testing: Hypothesis 1: Total amount of postop. recovery time will be lower for those receiving local anesthetics than for those receiving general anesthetics. Hypothesis 2: Amount of time taken to reach discharge-level recovery for vital signs will be lower for those receiving local anesthetics than for those receiving general anesthetics. Hypothesis 3: Amount of time taken to reach discharge level recovery for surgical bleeding will be lower for those receiving local anesthetics than for those receiving general anesthetics. Hypothesis 4: Amount of time take to reach discharge-level recovery for pain, nausea and/or vomiting will be lower for those receiving local anesthetics than for those receiving general anesthetics. Hypothesis 5: Amount of time taken to reach discharge level recovery for intake and out-take of fluids will be lower for those receiving local anesthetics than for those receiving general anesthetics. Hypothesis 6: Amount of time take to re
