A. This section presents four reasons supporting the notion that contemporary schooling is failing to develop young peopleÆs moral sense.

1. An increase in school violence indicates students are not learning even basic moral behavior.

2. Failures in graduates learning critical thinking skills and the fact that moral reasoning requires critical thinking skills indicates that schools are failing to develop studentsÆ moral sense at least to the extent that critical thinking is involved.

3. There is a controversy over what values and morals to teach and how to teach accompanied by the lack of sound research aimed at resolving it. Thus there is no firm foundation for moral education efforts.

4. Children and youth are often not reinforced for moral learning and therefore tend to not learn it or not learn it well.

A. This section of the essay concludes that the position taken is supported by the four listed reasons. Reasons are summarized.

I cannot believe that this country cannot come together around some values, what these kids need is a moral life... the issue is not ideas, it is conduct. The real question is how we reach these young people morally, and what do we bring to them.
