Social Meanings of News

News as a human construction shaped by its social world is the major idea in Daniel BerkowitzÆs 1997 book Social Meanings of News. The book is a text-reader and, as Berkowitz points out, the readings ôrepresent a blend of classic studies and lesser-known pieces that combine to make important pointsö (xiii). The basic questions the different writers attempt to answer are, what is news, and why does news turn out the way it does.

The book is divided into three parts for a total of 30 essays, each written by different media and communication experts. Part I, the Introduction, provides the framework for thinking about news. Part II centers on news as social production, and how news is selected. The concept of ôgate keepingö is a key notion here. The ôgate keeperö is not the single reporter deciding what stories to select or reject.
