Herbert GansÆ 1979 study of the national news media, Deciding WhatÆs News: A Study of CBS Evening News, NBC Nightly News Newsweek and Time is a cultural sociologistÆs analysis of news practices and production. The authorÆs concern is with the social construction of news, what gets reported, what doesnÆt, and why. The book is divided into three sections. Part 1 describes how America is reported in the popular, domestic news media. Part 2 discusses why the news is reported the way it is.
