Socialization & International Students

The successful integration of international students into an American university setting involves socialization into a whole new society and presents problems on many levels. There may be language barriers, cultural barriers, religious barriers, and educational barriers to overcome. The students may also face racial prejudice issues, not only from American students, but from other international student groups. Symbolic interactionism does not suggest there is a specific structure to a social system, but concentrates on the way individuals interpret social situations and the behavior of others to give meaning to their social interactions (Sobek). The symbolic interactionist paradigm is very subjective, and suggests that the subject should be capable of expressing their preferences even though their access to information on the situation is incomplete, and the above constraints limit their options considerably (Lal 421).
