Research Project Results RESULTS In order to test the stud

This is an excerpt from the paper...

In order to test the study's two research hypotheses, frequencies of white-space responses to Rorschach Cards I, II, and VII were analyzed at two levels of Gender (male and female) and two levels of Age of Cards (old and new) using the two-way analysis of variance statistic. Descriptive statistics (cell means, marginal means, standard deviations), as well as the findings observed for the performed analysis of variance, are presented in Table 1.

As can be seen from inspection of this table, only one finding was significant. This finding was a main effect observed for the Age of Card variable (F=5.13; df=1;56; p=.0274). Marginal means revealed the nature of the observed main effect. Specifically, the frequency of white space responses was observed to be significantly higher for new cards (Mean=1.20) than for old cards (Mean=0.70).

Significant findings were not observed for the Gender variable. In other words, regardless of whether they were exposed to new or to old cards, males and females responded in roughly the same way.

One further point that needs to be noted with respect to the study's findings concerns the F value observed for the Card by Gender interaction. This value (F = 2.76) was not significant at the .05 level; however, it was sufficiently high (p = .1023) that it seems possible that the value could signal a trend in the direction of an interaction of the Gender and Age of Card

nificance for the gender variable, this can be discussed in terms of two previous studies. The first study relevant to this finding of no significance is that of Ekehammar (1971) who found a gender difference in frequency of white space response but concluded that the study needed to be replicated using a larger sample size before confidence could fully be placed in the finding. As for the second study which also examined for a gender effect and did use a larger sample size--a study performed by Koninck and Crabbe-Decleve (1971)--gender effects were not found; this fact suggests that there may not really be a gender effect for white space responses. When the fact that this research also did not observe a gender effect is considered in light of these two previous studies, it seems even more likely that it is valid to claim that men and women do not differ in their white space responses to Rorschach cards. However, it is important to note that findings suggest a trend in the direction of a significant interaction indicating that, had a larger sample been used, there is the possibility that male and female white-space response frequencies might differ at differ levels of the Age of Card variable.
