The Suzanne Somers Diet

This is an excerpt from the paper...

The Suzanne Somers diet is not very well explained, even in her book, according to all the reviews. Her descriptions of the program are very vague, and one reviewer, Widemark, (2004) says it would be hard to understand how anyone would lose weight on it, yet also says that the diet appeared to only allow about 1100 calories a day, which is very restrictive. Another says the information in her latest book seems to contradict some of what she has said before (Diet, 2004). The diet is basically a low carbohydrate/high protein one, but is not as extreme as the Atkins diet and does allow a small amount of carbohydrate (Widemark, 2004). Somers is against the use of refined flour and sugar, and the artificial sweetener aspartame (Nutrasweet). She also advocates the French method of food mixing, which Somers claims is better for the digestion and prevents the body from storing fat. She says her program balances oneÆs hormones and that one can tell if they are eating the wrong foods and causing a hormonal imbalance, but there is absolutely no medical evidence suggesting that food mixing has any effect at all, or that a hormonal imbalance causes fat storage. In fact, none of SomersÆ claims are backed up by citations. Even the registered nutritionist who wrote the foreword to her latest book does not openly endorse her food-combining theories, which are the basic theme of her book.

Somers gives a long list of banned foods, but the list also includes healthy foods such as bana
