During the past few decades, there has been an increase in types of American family structure and an increase in the overall number of non-traditional families. Along with that change in family structure, there has come criticism asserting that nontraditional families are not as healthy for children and that children in nontraditional families differ from children in traditional families in terms of psychological health and other issues.

In particular, there has been focus on the children of unmarried single women, and on the children of lesbian or gay parents. More recently, there has been concern about the increase in children born from artificial, or donor, insemination. However, the concern has not generally been borne out by the research.

One problem in the research to date has been that issues of genetic relatedness and family structure have been confounded in the design, leading to unclear results. This study is designed to separate issues of genetic relatedness or "ownness" and issues of family functioning as related to family structure.

All families were selected from among clients of The Sperm Bank of California. The sample was drawn from the client among the TSBC files who had conceived and given birth to children prior to July 1990. Thus, children in those families would be at least five years of age at the beginning of data collection.

After this pool was limited by excluding participants in a previous study, and two women self-identified as bisexual, 195 families were eligible to participate. Letters and phone calls were used to contact 108 families, ultimately, and 80 families agreed to participate in the research.
