California Adult Parole Board

Currently, the Board of Prison Terms (BPT) in California is the adult parole board, and conducts parole hearings for all inmates sentenced to life terms with the possibility for parole, but all sets terms and conditions of parole for all persons released on parole in California (Board, 2004). The BPT consists of nine Commissioners appointed by the Governor and approved by the Senate, who serve four-year terms which are staggered. The Commissioners work full-time in their positions as BPT members, and travel throughout California to conduct parole hearings at different correctional institutions. These hearings consist of panels which may include a Deputy Commissioner, who is a senior civil service employee. The Chairman is assigned by the Governor, the Executive Officer under the general director is Chairman, and manages the daily operations of the BPTs different divisions.

The BPT conducts parole revocation hearings for anyone who violates the terms and conditions of their parole; conducts certification, placement, and parole revocations for mentally disordered offenders; conducts probable cause hearings for prisoners or parolees in revoked status who meet the criteria to be identified as sextally violent prddators; and considers requests from foreign born inmates who wish to be transferred to their country of citizenship to serve out the remainder of their sentences (Board, 2004).
