This is an excerpt from the paper...
This research explored the perceptions of collegeaged persons with respect to children from divorced families. The hypothesis tested held that collegeaged persons, subsequent to hearing stories about children from divorced families, would recall more negative attributes about male children from divorced families than about female children from such families. The hypothesis was not supported by the experimental findings because more negative attributed were not recalled in relation to male children of divorce as opposed to female children from such families. This finding is in opposition to the findings of both Santrock and Amato. One explanation for the difference n findings may be the character of the subjects, which were college students in this experiment as opposed to professional teachers in the Santrock and Amato studies. This research explored the perceptions of collegeaged persons with respect to children from divorced families. The hypothesis tested held that collegeaged persons, subsequent to hearing stories about children from divorced families, would recall more negative attributes about male children from divorced families than about female children from such families. An unstable family life, an absence of effective parental involvement, and economic deprivation are but a few of the factors affecting the children of divorce partners. 4. An absence of the wife's participation in the labor force leads to increased marital instability among young persons. This finding contradicts theory.
5. Holding traditional values, and strong religious convictions do not help explain rates of divorce or marital instability. This finding is inconsistent with theory.
Heaton, Albrecht, and Martin (1985, pp. 631640) conducted a study to determine if their exists some critical point in the duration of a marriage beyond which the probability of divorce is significantly reduced. Second, the researchers tested two modelsthe adjustment model and the perpetual problem model, to determine which best explains the timing of divorce. Much of the theory reported in the literature holds that most persons can adjust to marital problems, and through such adjustments can overcome to risk of divorce. The researchers contended that this theoretical assumption has not been adequately tested. Thus, while not formulating specific hypotheses, they did test the assumption through the testing of the two modelsthe adjustment and the perpetual problem.
The perceptual problems model was found to have greater applicability in explaining the timing of divorce th
