Bromelain is the general name given to a family of sulfhydral proteolytic enzymes that are obtained from Ananas comosus, the pineapple plant. It is usually distinguished from other fruit bromelain or stem bromelain depending upon its source, with all commercially available bromelain derived from the stem (Kelly, 1). First introduced as a therapeutic compound in 1957, bromelain's actions as identified by Kelly (1) include: 1) inhibition of platelet aggregation; 2) fribrinolytic activity; 3) anti-inflammatory action; 4) anti-tumor action; 5) modulation of cytokines and immunity; 6) skin debridement properties; 7) enhanced absorption of other drugs; 8) mucolytic properties; 9) digestive assistance; 10) enhanced wound healing; and 11) cardiovascular and circulatory improvement. In this brief report, the origin, use, dose information, drug interactions, and precautionary measures associated with bromelain will be discussed. The research identifies bromelain as "particularly useful in reducing muscle and tissue inflammation and as a digestive aid (Wholehealthmd.com, 1).

Bromelain was first introduced into mainstream medicinal use in 1957 and has over time proved an important aid in treating many different diseases and/or conditions (Meinig, 1). As a protolytic enzyme, bromelain acts by decomposing protein in the body. Derived largely from the stem of the pineapple plant, its primary component is a sulfhydryl proteolytic fraction. It also contains a peroxidase, acid phosp
