BREAST CARE FOR ELDERLY WOMEN This research exam

This is an excerpt from the paper...

This research examines nursing information related to the importance of breast care for women aged 65 years old and older. The target group among the population of elderly women is comprised of ambulatory persons residing on an independent basis. The target group is further defined as predominantly middleclass persons covered by both Medicare and supplementary health care insurance residing in an urban area with a total population approximating 40,000. Most people included in the target group are of average intelligence or higher who keep abreast of current affairs through daily exposure to mass media. The majority of the people included in the target group have access to private automobile transportation, and all have access to reliable public transportation.

Breast Care Information For Elderly Women

The women included in the target group must receive health care information that persuades them that breast care is important for women of their age. For many of the women in the target group, publicity of breast care issues in the mass media may satisfy the breast care information requirement (Rimer, Resch, King, Ross, Lerman, Boyce, Kessler, and Engstrom, 1992, pp. 369380). For other women in the target group, however, some sort of outreach information program will likely be required to satisfy the breast care information requirement (Wruble, AlkobiKedushim, and Musgrave, 1994, pp. 149154). or breast cancer" considered in this study (Mock, 1993, p. 154). All of the women selected for the sample had completed their treatment for breast cancer a minimum of two months and a maximum of two years prior to participation in the study. The four treatment groups "were compared on both demographic and treatment variables" as a part of the research design (Mock, 1993, p. 154). Only age proved to be a statistically significant difference between the four treatment groups within the context of the demographic variables. With respect to treatment variables, the four groups were compared on the basis of the responses to the three body image and selfconcept scales. No statistically significant differences in selfconcept were found to exist between the four treatment groups (Mock, 1993, p. 155). Differences between the four treatment groups in body image as measured by the Body Image Scale and by one sub scale of the Tennessee SelfConcept Scale were not statistically significant. Differences in body image, as measured by the Body Image Visual Analogue Scale, between the four treatment groups were found to be statistically significant. The conservative surgery treatment group was found to have a statistically significant
