Role of Insulin Insulin is a hormone produced in the p

This is an excerpt from the paper...

Insulin is a hormone produced in the pancreas to regulate the amount of sugar in the blood. In persons with diabetes, the pancreas produces no insulin, too little insulin to control blood sugar, or defective insulin (Brown & Brillon, 1999). Brown and Brillon (1999) report that almost all people with diabetes have one of two major types.

About 10 percent of diabetics have Type I or insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). Their bodies produce no insulin. About 85 percent of persons with diabetes have Type II or non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). Their bodies produce some insulin, but it is not enough or it doesn't work properly to funnel glucose through the receptors into their cells. Type II diabetes can sometimes be controlled with a carefully planned diet and exercise, but oral medications or insulin injections may be necessary.

Saudek (1997) reports that, despite its widespread use, much is wrong with conventional medications for diabetes, especially subcutaneous insulin injection. It tends to be painful and inconvenient; it delivers insulin slowly with highly inconsistent pharmacokinetics; and once delivered into the skin, it cannot be "turned off".

For all of the foregoing reasons, many new alternative approaches to insulin delivery and to problems related to insulin deliver have been developed. This flyer provides essential information on some of the most important of these new developments in the treatment of diabetes.

f the care of the diabetic patient. Many glucose monitors are available with various and diverse features (Foster, Goode & Small, 1999). Self- monitoring of blood glucose, if used properly, can have a positive effect by increasing patients' involvement in their overall diabetes care. Studies of 18 home blood glucose monitors indicates fairly wide variance in precision, underlining the need for a common approach to calibration of home glucose monitors (Johnson & Baker, 1999). * Subcutaneous insulin infusion sets - Insulin pumps are used by many people, as an alternative therapy to injections. Pumps are connected to patients and deliver insulin continuously. Patients are connected to pumps by infusion sets, which have either a needle or Teflon Cannula inserted subcutaneously (Berger, 1999). The infusion set is much like a mini-iv, many are on the market and they vary in lengths. Patients usually replace the infusion sets about every three days, in order to prevent infections and to promote good bg control. The benefits of subcutaneous infusion sets include freedom from rigid schedules, better Hba1cs, and overall better blood glucose control (Berger, 1999). * Glycohemoglobin A lc at home testing - Home glucose blood monitoring
