The cerebellum is the second largest portion of the brain, located below the occipital lobes, and separated from them by the transverse fissure (Applegate, 2000, 168). It consists of two hemispheres connected in the middle by a structure known as the vermis. An extension of the dura mater, the flax cerebelli, forms a partial partition between the hemispheres. Another extension of the dura mater, the tentorium cerebelli, is found in the transverse fissure between the occipital lobes and the cerebellum. The cerebellum consists of white matter surrounded by a thin layer of gray matter, the cerebellar cortex. The white matter is in a branching arrangement known as the arbor vitae.
