Effect of Weather in Denver, Colorado

Denver, Colorado lies on the edge of an area known as 'Tornado Alley,' which is the area where the most intense killer tornadoes are likely to occur (Tornado). This is an area where F4 and F5 tornadoes have struck multiple times in the past. Some people consider Tornado Alley just the area where tornadoes have struck most frequently, where multiple tornado touchdowns have occurred year after year. However, in 1974, a super tornado outbreak took place in Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia; and in 1925, the Tri-State tornado killed 695 people in Missouri, Illinois and Indiana, but these states are often not included in 'Tornado AlleyÆ maps. Florida has many small tornados, but it is rarely included in such maps. In November 2002 a tornado outbreak struck Alabama, Tennessee and Ohio, killing 36 people, and in September that year a tornado outbreak hit Indiana.

In general, the area runs down the center of the United States, including such states as North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Oklahoma, Arkansas, western Kentucky and Tennessee, Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana (Tornado). The eastern edge of Colorado and Wyoming are also included because they get many small tornados and have had significant tornadoes in their history. Other than Colorado and Arkansas, all the other states included have had F5 tornado touchdowns. Some people limit 'Tornado AlleyÆ to Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas because this is the heart of 'Tornado Alley.Æ It is important for anyone flying out of airports in the Denver area into those regions to be aware of the tornado risk in those areas. It is not a safe area for inexperienced pilots to be flying.
