Science is a way of learning about the physical universe by applying the principles of the scientific method (Definitions). It is a careful, disciplined search for knowledge obtained by examination of the best available evidence, and the results can always be corrected and improved by the discovery of new evidence. The scientific method is a process by which scientists endeavor to construct an accurate representation of the world by collaborative effort over time (Appendix E). It contains four steps, the first of which is the observation and description of a phenomenon or group of phenomena. The second step is the formulation of a hypothesis to explain the phenomena (in physics this becomes a causal mechanism or a mathematical relation).
