This is an excerpt from the paper...

Donatello was one of the greatest sculptors from the Renaissance period. Some art historians believe that Donatello was an important artist because, during his relatively long life, he revived Greco-Roman classicism in the numerous works he created in various media. By the time of his death at age 80, he had left a body of work that was so important and significant that only one other sculptor, the great Michealangelo, could equal it. And some prominent authors, including Vasari, believe that Donatello's work paved the way for Michealangelo's work and that Donatello was the initiator of the some of the greatest sculptors made during the early years of Renaissance sculpture (Ceysson 12-13). Like Michaelangelo, Donatello became well known in Italy during his lifetime and could boast of his works adorning quite a few Italian towns, despite their lack of support from some of the wealthier patrons in Europe, such as the Vischer family in Nuremberg (Smith 128). Nevertheless, Donatello is credited as one of the most talented sculptors of the Renaissance, if not all time.

Donatello (Donato di Niccolo di Betto Bardi) is thought to have been born in 1386. His career began in Florence, Italy, where he apprenticed as a boy with the painter, Lorenzo di Bicci. By 17, Donatello had found his vocation; he worked in the shop of the sculptor Ghiberti, and the rest, of course, is history. The artist first began his professional career as a sculptor whe

gular free-standing statues. His contemporaries admired his abilities to express emotion in a cold piece of stone, and this helped make him one of the most admired and respected artists of his time (Ceysson 34). Tabernacle of the Annunciation Donatello's Tabernacle of the Annunciation is a 13' 9" limestone and terracotta carving which stands at the Santa Croce, in Florence, Italy. The terracotta is gilded, giving it the rich and ornate look which made the artist famous. This piece was completed relatively near the beginning of the artist's career, in 1433, and took five years to complete. The originality of this piece proves that Donatello did more than imitate other artists; his work was lighter in style, yet more impressive than his contemporaries. The work is probably best known for its pictorial quality, and it incorporated new cultural elements insofar as it captured the drama of the intensity of the attitudes and gestures between Virgin Mary and the angel it depicts. The angel kneels, as if praying or pleading to the virgin. Mary holds her hand across her chest, and the other hand holds an antique gilded leather book, presumably the Bible. The design, or the architectural elements which surround the pair, is ornat
