ading comprehension is a key focal point of literature-based instruction. Like the basal approach to reading, the literature-based approach is not without criticism. Lamb (1977) has delineated several of the most trenchant criticisms of this approach. In particular, Lamb reports that the approach has been criticized based on the fact that many children's literary books are of such high quality that they present serious readability problems for many students. On the other hand, the basal series is said to provide children with a lower level of complexity thereby providing them with the foundation they need in terms of the kinds of reading skills required to tackle the more literary books. Further, a portion of the literature-based approach involves the use of literary analysis. However, Lamb (1977) reports that this analysis has been criticized as inherently uninteresting to children unless teachers are truly skilled in explicating the writer's craft in developing and presenting the story. Also, the literature-based approach is said by Lamb (1977) to rely too heavily on the belief that strong literary focus is needed before children are able to respond to literature.
