Implicit Learning

This is an excerpt from the paper...

Seger, Carol Augart. (1994). Implicit learning. Psychological Bulletin, 115(2), 163-196.

This is a very extensive paper on implicit learning, which goes into a great amount of detail on the various features of implicit learning, a review of the learning tasks used to test implicit learning experimentally, the structure of stimuli used, the response modalities tested, and presents much experimental data on the subject (164-174). It talks about attention as being necessary for implicit learning to occur, and the automaticity of implicit learning - it takes place unknown to the subject (174-175). The role of memory in implicit learning is discussed in detail, and how implicit learning is transferred to novel stimuli. Biases in implicit learning are explored, then the paper turns to a discussion of the neural mechanisms which may be involved in implicit learning (183-185). A discussion of modeling of implicit learning follows.

After a brief conclusion, the article continues by developing a theory of implicit learning, relating it to unconscious cognition and to explicit thought (187-190). The article is very thorough, and gives a very good overview of implicit learning, and the experimental work involved in demonstrating the various aspects involved. It provides a strong background for anyone interested in an overview of the field, and offers many areas where researchers can delve into the subject matter more deeply, and carry out their own experiments. totally unconscious, and suggest that the role of consciousness is to confer adaptive control over behavior, and therefore there must be a link between consciousness and learning (15) Model learning is a clear case of implicit learning because it results from information processing, and activation-based processing and learning are a result of awareness (28). This type of learning is unintentional as compared to task learning, which forms representations directly related to current goals. Learning results from conscious experience, but learning does not have to take place consciously: it can be unconscious, and even then, it can affect future processing. While these arguments have been difficult to prove directly, it is well known that people can learn unintentionally, as has been proved in dual-cue testing studies (30). It is assumed that conscious and unconscious learning are both aspects of the same mechanism, and the possibility of unconscious learning leaves the way open for implicit learning. Seger, Carol A.
