Digital technology vs. Person-to-Person Interactions

This is an excerpt from the paper...

Digital technology weakens social capital in that it promotes isolationism in people as individuals. If people can do most of their work from a computer terminal without interacting directly with others, they lose their interpersonal skills and so they lose social capital. They don't speak to people face-to-face, and this is a negative aspect of digital technology. In the days before digital technology, people spent more time in personal interactions in the work place; they got to know the people they worked with on a personal level. Digital technology has taken that away for the most part, and we talk via phone, fax, computer screens, etc. without really getting to know the person at the other end of the line on a personal level and getting to know how they really think and feel about things.
