Analysis of a Crime

This is an excerpt from the paper...

Victor was never known to drink, so when he was found dead on the bed in his dorm room one morning, surrounded by empty beer cans, the circumstances were immediately suspicious. His body was found by a friend who noticed he was absent from a class he never missed who went to check to see if he was okay. The campus police were called first, who were baffled by no signs of forced entry or a fight, and immediately called the local police. The crime scene was examined carefully by the detectives, and the body sent to the medical examiner for an autopsy.

Though his friends all protested that Victor never drank, the evidence in his room seemed to suggests otherwise: beer cans strewn everywhere - an unopened case of beer on top of a closet, a couple of wine bottle secreted in draws under clothing. If Victor didn't drink, someone certainly went to a lot of trouble to make it look as if he did. Fingerprint analysis showed a remarkable lack of fingerprints on all these bottles and cans, except for Victor's, which was unusual because there should be many prints from people handling the bottles and cans at the store etc. Had someone wiped them clean? Who and why?

An autopsy on Victor's body and toxicology screening seemed to indicate at first that he had died from acute alcohol poisoning. There was no evidence of a long-term drinking problem (e.g. cirrhosis). Femoral venous blood (FVB) was taken to estimate blood alcohol level at time of death. Ethanol content was determine

signs of a struggle, either on the body, or in the room, according to the detectives. This suggested someone else was present at Victor's death, and moved the body after he died, possibly to cover up the events that had really brought about his death. The police then began more in-depth questioning of Victor's friends and known associates. It seemed he had an ex-girlfriend who had gotten involved with cocaine a long time before, and had introduced Victor to the stuff. He took to it much more than she did, and when she decided to go clean, Victor refused to do the same and this had caused the girl to break off their relationship. The two had recently met up again, with Victor claiming he was 'clean' and they started seeing each other occasionally. It came out later that on the night in question, Maria had visited Victor in his dorm room, and had found him using cocaine. He tried to get her to join him, but she refused, hoping to convince Victor to stop. As the evening wore on, Victor became very agitated and so Maria tried some coke with him, just to calm him down. As soon as she took her first snort, her months off the stuff were wiped out in an instant, and she avidly reached for more. Later, as they were both com
