John Stuart Mill was one of the most influential philosophers of the nineteenth century. In his masterpiece On Liberty, Mill meditated on the perils faced by individuals in any society from the tyranny of the majority. Mill fervently believed that minority opinions must be safeguarded in any society. As Mill notes, "there is a limit to the legitimate interference of collective opinion with individual independence; and to find that limit, and maintain it against encroachment, is as indispensable to a good condition of human affairs, as protection against political despotism" (Mill, 219).
