The condition of America's health care system highlights the contradictions and ironies of the society as a whole. The richest country in human history is the only one in the developed world not to have a national health care system that covers everyone. There are currently at least 46 million people in the United States who have no health care coverage (The Economist, January 26th, 2006).

Yet in spite of providing no medical services at all for nearly a sixth of its population, the country spends by far the most on health care of any nation in the world û $1.9 trillion in 2004, or 16% of the nation's gross national product û more than twice the average of other developed countries.
