Hidden Meanings
This is an excerpt from the paper...
By analyzing the narrator in the song, the narrator in the story is actually telling the reader about herself. Her complaint through the whole story is that people do not understand her. She tries to explain to the professor that the reason her work "sprawls lacks cohesion or is not well organized" is because she is working two jobs as well as going to school, and is writing the piece very late at night when she is tired. She believes the professor misunderstands her because she isn't very literature and doesn't use big words, and because she doesn't say back to the professor the same things the professor said to the class like Sean who can "say back the same things you say only translated into his particular language which I don't rally know what he's talking about using those big words it's clear he don't even know what they mean" and gets a good grade for them. The hidden meaning in Melanie is that she is really much brighter than she appears. She tries to impress the professor with how hard she is working and how she is struggling to put herself through school, and that the professor is not seeing the true reality of Melanie. She tries to impress her with the hard life she has had, and how she has had no help from her family and is now struggling to make it through school on her own. She thinks people don't really see how hard she is trying or who she really is inside - they just dismiss her as being dumb as well as being "a big fat woman" like in the song.
