Certainly, Vladmir Putin's Russia has its share of critics that would argue that Putin is steering the country away from democratization. These critics aren't without their own share of evidenceùit would seem at a first glance, that Russia is following a regressive trend toward authoritarianism. After all, these critics would argue, Putin is responsible for incarcerating his political opponents, undermining the authority of both houses of parliament, and destroying the independent press, when opposition, balance, and independence are necessary to the democratic structure. These points however, are not without fault in and of themselves, and also fail to point out all the good that Putin has done for Russia since the beginning
