Leaders and Change Outstanding leaders

Outstanding leaders are not afraid to confront the challenges posed by change. As Jon L. Pierce and John W. Newstrom (2000) have pointed out, leaders engage in the art of inducing compliance, exercise influence, persuade others to follow their visions, and employ power in shaping the performance of their organizations and its members. Simultaneously, contemporary leaders as described by Fred E. Fiedler (1972) also recognize that different situations call for different approaches to leading and that all leaders tend to function in a climate that is characterized by uncertainty and an ongoing need to rise to the challenge posed by change. In this essay, the importance of developing, as a leader, the capacity to confront and even embrace change will be discussed.

Pierce and Newstrom (2000) make the point in their edited text that leaders û who are not necessarily only managers û are individuals who recognize the necessity of embracing innovation and rejecting any possibility of maintaining the status quo in the face of new opportunities. Businesses function effectively when their leaders recognize new opportunities for growth or increased productivity and, as significantly, when leaders are able to use their skills and knowledge to overcome resistance to change.
