Legal Issues of Biometrics in Healthcare
B
This is an excerpt from the paper...
Biometrics is a science that focuses on the statistical analysis of physical and/or behavioral traits that determine individual identity (Perrin, 2002). Consequently, biometric technologies have multiple uses, particularly with respect to verifying the identity of an individual based on the measurement and analysis of what are unique individual characteristics. As one analyst, technology and healthcare expert Richard Perrin (2002, p. 86) put it, "Indeed, biometric techniques increasingly are being viewed as the preferred means to confirm an individual's identity accurately and incontrovertibly in real time." While security systems in airports and certain research or military and financial institutions have received the most attention with respect to use of such technologies, they are also applicable in healthcare as well. This essay will consider these applications, focusing on the legal ramifications of biometric technology in the healthcare field. John Schneider (2005) noted that in the healthcare field, biometric technologies are employed for several purposes. First, they enhance patient identification by creating a biometric set of identified physical and behavioral traits ensuring that an individual patient can be readily recognized throughout the entire gamut of the healthcare system. Secondly, these data are used to ensure that when information about a patient is shared among disparate Electronic Medical Records (EMRS), the sharing itself is secure. As Schnei
