Haiti

This is an excerpt from the paper...

Haiti is an impoverished country with 63 percent of its population undernourished and only about 25 percent having clean drinking water (Thurn, 2005). The average daily caloric intake is only 480 kcal (Food). There is a lack of good farming through loss of topsoil due to erosion through deforestation (Thurn, 2005). A tree-planting campaign could lead to the retention of topsoil, and the development of more arable land, making the people of Haiti more self-sufficient in their food supply. Education programs are needed so that Haitians learn to farm more productively, and instruction in modern farming techniques, fertilization, crop rotation, and the use of genetically modified crops which have a higher yield would be more beneficial to Haitian farmers than simply supplying Haitians with food from overseas.
