Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) (1) describes itself as "a voluntary, worldwide fellowship of men and women from all walks of life who meet together to attain and maintain sobriety." The sole membership requirement is a desire to stop drinking; AA charges no dues or fees for membership, and welcomes all who voluntarily seek its services. As part of the requirements for this academic course, this writer was expected to attend and report upon an AA meeting, commenting upon such issues as the rationale for AA and for attendance, the stories told by the men and women who remain anonymous at such meetings, and my personal feelings about the meeting and what I learned while in attendance. The meeting I attended was held at 7 PM in a local Methodist Church recreation hall. About 29 to 33 people were in attendance at this meeting, which I learned was a fairly typical number on any given night; the group meets three times per week at this site, but members also attend other meetings held in various locations around town.
