Human Resource Management: Labor Force Issues

As John M. Ivancevich (1998) has commented, human resource management (HRM) is charged with responding to many labor force issues, including the aging and diversity of the contemporary work force and the skill deficiencies of workers in the new knowledge-based economy. With respect to the aging of the American work force, HRM must ensure that companies do not practice age discrimination, that issues related pensions and retirement planning are addressed, and that sufficient replacements for the now retiring Baby Boomer generation are found.

Ivancevich (1998) also pointed out that diversity and multiculturalism requires that HRM address questions of affirmative action programming in recruitment and promotion of minority group workers from protected classes. Additionally, HRM is responsible for ensuring that cultural diversity and differences are respected in the workplace and that discrimination does not occur, as well as providing a process for resolving matters arising from these problems.

Finally, HRM is the locus of educational and training activities designed to enhance the skills and knowledge of workers of all types and in all fields. Ivancevich (1998) noted that the training and development function of HRM is among its key activities, particularly in light of the need for knowledge workers able to function efficiently in the new high-tech environment.
