Diversity on College Campuses There has been much disc

This is an excerpt from the paper...

There has been much discussion lately about diversity on the college campus. College administrators across the nation have stated their commitment to valuing this increasing multiculturalism and multiplicity of equally-appropriate points of view caused not only by newly immigrant populations, but also by the relatively recent vocality of formerly oppressed groups, such as African Americans, women, gays, and the disabled. In fact, the administrators at the University of Michigan recently took their case for a diverse campus all the way to the Supreme Court. But not everyone heralds this new age of multivocality.

The President of the United States himself weighed in against Michigan's commitment to diversity. Rather, people such as the President argue in favor of uniform codes of admission and education that should be applied to all students, regardless of their ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Only such uniform codes can create a standard bar to which all students can aspire. Such bars are the true equal opportunity because they clarify the standard all students must meet to be deemed educated.

Scholars who call themselves classicists tend to agree with the President's position. They harken back to a time when educational curricula was uniform and privileged the teaching of the classics of Western civilization as the high watermark of scholarly achievement. They argue against what they view as the denigration of these obvious classical and universally applicable w

The classicists continue to maintain that their favored texts are being reduced to just another voice in this multicultural wilderness when theirs is the voice that created the wilderness. The multiculturalists maintain that such teaching merely continues to replay the oppressive hegemony that places these texts as reactions to a dominant voice. Thus, henceforth, the University will apply its recent financial bounty to institute its long-researched "Ethnic Me Program." This program is based on sound scientific research that will be used to support the ethno-cultural research uncovered by the University in its exploration of this matter. Certain genetic researchers have revealed that each person's ethnicity can be discovered from an examination of their DNA. For example, these researchers have determined that every person's DNA is a mixture of four basic ethnic subgroups: Indo-European, Sub-Saharan, Native American, and East-Asian. Therefore, the University's "Ethnic Me Program" will require that every student undergo this testing to determine their precise ethni
