The National Health Service Corps (NHSC)is part of the larger Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which includes the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Indian Health Service (IHS), the Health Resources and Services Administraiton (HRSA), the Substance Abuse and Mental Health (SAMHSA), and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (HHS) (HHS).

The HHS is the principal agency of the United States government for protecting public health and providing essential human services, especially for those unable to help themselves (HHS). The department includes over 300 programs, and has a budget for Fiscal Year 2004 of $548 billion, and has 66,639 employee overall. HHS works with state and local governments to provide services through local, state, and county agencies. The programs are administered by 11 division, which includes 8 agencies in the U.S. Public Health Service and three human services agencies.

The NIH is the world's most noted research organization, with 27 separate components in Institutes and Centers with over 75 buildings on more than 300 acres in Bethesda, Maryland (NIH). It has a budget of $28 billion for Fiscal Year 2004. It's goal is to help prevent, detect, diagnose, and treat disease and disability, with projects ranging from rare diseases to the common cold. The mission of IHS is to raise the physical, mental, social and spiritual health of American Indians and Alaska Natives, and assure that comprehensive culturally acceptable personal and public health services are available to, and accessible by, these people (IHS). The IHS is the principal federal healthcare provider and health advocate for Indian people, and its goal is to raise their standard of health care as high as possible. The IHS has a budget for Fiscal Year 2004 of $3.7 billion. The HRSA provides access to essential health care services for low-income people who are uninsured or live in rural areas, or in urban areas where health care is scarce (HHS). It provides health care for more than 13 million patients each year at more than 3,600 centers nationwide. It runs training and educational programs to build the healthcare network. It also has programs to benefit mothers with children and patients with HIV/AIDS through the Ryan White CARE Act programs. HRSA oversees the nation's organ transplantation system.
