Position of Women in Tanzania

In Tanzania, poverty is widespread, and society remains traditionalist with respect to gender issues, even though women's rights are protected by law (Tanzania). Violence against women is widespread, and traditional customs that subordinate women remain strong in both urban and rural areas. Women may be punished by their husbands for not bearing children, and wife-beating occurs at all levels of society. Many women are killed by their husbands, and others commit suicide because of the brutality. Women in refugee camps suffer rape and a high degree of sexual abuse.

Women face discriminatory inheritance practices, and ownership of property because the Government and courts make concessions to customary law and Islamic law (Tanzania). Unmarried women under 21 who bear children face jail time under Zanzibar law, and pregnant girls are forced to leave school, even though the law permits them to continue their education. Female genital mutilation is performed is performed at an early age on roughly 20 percent of the country's 130 main ethnic groups. Although the Constitution prohibits discrimination on the basis of nationality, tribe, origin, political affiliation, color, or religion, discrimination based on sex, age, or disability is not specifically prohibited by aw, but is discouraged in official public statements. Habitat for Humanity also provides no interest loans for those who cannot afford adequate housing. Families can pay back the loans with low payments over 10 years. Loan payments are put into a fund to provide more loans. Women in developing nations are employed in industries, ranging from clothing manufacture to food processing, facing unique work-related challenges based on their gender, and the quality of their nation's resources (Celcee). These women are entrepreneurs, but are often unable to become self-sufficient or to adequately support their families.
