A speech by Senator Robert Byrd to the Senate on Wednesday April 21st declared, "Surely I am not the only one who hears echoes of Vietnam in this development" (Comparing Iraq and). It was said amidst the bloodiest month of fighting in the Iraq war, and a month which ultimately saw more lives lost than the initial month of war that ended in the fall of Baghdad. Republicans were deeply offended by his words, but they have been echoing ever since in the minds of many. Even the words of Senator John McCain, a Vietnam veteran, and ex-prisoner-of-war, could not drown out Byrd's words. Both Byrd, and Senator Edward Kennedy, another ardent opponent of the Iraq war, made the mistake of voting for the Gulf of Tonkin resolution, that was used as an excuse to dramatically increase the military, and remember well how the administration deliberately deceived Congress to expand a war in which American troops had no place - and they see it has happened again. It must be admitted that anyone who hears Bush declaring that the occupation of Iraq is going according to plan must wonder what plan, and must hear echoes of Vietnam. Just as America should never have invaded Vietnam, they should never have invaded Iraq. Even though many argue that comparison's between the two are unjustified because the reasons for going to war were different in each case, they still believe that America should have learned lessons from its involvement in Vietnam.
