The study of Lafond, Corriveau and Prince looked at postural control mechanisms in the elderly, particularly those with diabetic sensory neuropathy (DSN) compared to normal controls. The subjects were 11 patients with type 2 diabetes and DSN, and 20 healthy elderly subjects as controls. The DSN patients were recruited from a diabetes clinic and were not selected on the basis of complaints of DSN by the patients or their doctors. Their DSN was quantified as being mild, moderate or severe polyneuropathy by previously established methods which have been shown to be reliable, with good sensibility and specificity.
