Hating American Foreign Policy Just after the Septe

This is an excerpt from the paper...

Just after the September 11 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, President Bush asked Congress and the nation "Why do they hate us?" He answered the question by stating that they hate us because of our freedom and democracy. But many scholars disagree with President Bush's response. Rather, they argue that many Arabs, Muslims and other people around the world seem to hate Americans because they hate American foreign policy. People around the world do not hate Americans, although many of them hate and resent American foreign policy. They also hate what they perceive to be America's arrogance in the use of its status as a superpower. The hatred of these aspects of America is sometimes transferred to Americans as individuals or a group, particularly in the case of September 11, 2001. But as this paper will demonstrate, the hatred is more political than personal.

On September 11, 2001, Islamic fundamentalists hijacked American passenger planes and flew them into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, two significant symbols of American economic and military power (Cooper 112). The choice of these symbols suggests that the terrorists were trying to make a particular point by their actions. Then, in March 2002, a poll of people in 10 Islamic nations found that, despite the September 11 attacks, a majority of Muslims in all the countries did not believe that the U.S. military action in Afghanistan was unjustified and they described t

lars also argue that many people around the world hate American foreign policy. One scholar, for example, writes about how America pumped $3 billion into Pakistan during the 1980s to support the Islamists who were fighting the Soviet Union in Afghanistan (Beaumont 1). But because the U.S. could not control to whom the Pakistanis allotted the money, some of the money ended up supporting groups such as the Taliban and al_Qaeda (Beaumont 1). Then, less than twenty years later, the United States bombs an entire country to punish the very people it once financially supported. Another scholar argues that the first Persian Gulf War was viewed as "an outright massacre" by many in the Arab world. But beyond that, he argues that the U.N. estimates that the number of Iraqis killed as a result of the sanctions that followed that war was as high as 1.4 million people, 500,000 of whom were children (Woods 1). Therefore, many Arabs believe that those who supported the first Persian Gulf War and the U.N. sanctions were guilty of killing innocents. Consequently, they "smell hypocrisy" when U.S. president George Bush argues that it is the Muslim terrorists who are the only ones who kill innocent people in their attacks and when then_Secreta
