The consolidation activity in the American air transportation industry in the years since deregulation has not resulted in an overall decline in the purchase of new aircraft by the carriers. What has occurred in this context, however, is (1) the deferral of replacement orders, and (2) a shifting of emphasis away from widebody (747 type) aircraft, and toward narrowbody longrange aircraft, such as the Boeing 757.22 Research question number one asked: as a result of air transportation deregulation, did the size of the civil aviation fleet change to an extent that the CRAF was affectedeither positively or negativelyto any significant extent?
