The purpose of the proposed project is to develop a social studies curriculum for a continuing education program offered at a local high school. It is the contention of this school that a new social studies curriculum is needed because, last year, 69 percent of the students who took the High School Equivalency Test failed the social studies portion of the exam. These data were said to indicate the need for a better social studies curriculum.The curriculum that will be developed will be based on the curriculum development principles outlined by Rubin (1991). According to Rubin's perspective of curriculum development, any course of study must be designed on the basis of data obtained from answering four basic research questions. Tailoring these four questions to the concerns of the proposed project allows for the formulation of the following specific set of research questions: (1) What educational purposes does the school seek to attain through its social studies curriculum? (2) What educational experiences can be provided that are likely to attain these purposes? (3) How can these educational experiences be effectively organized? (4) How can it be determined that these purposes are being attained? Based on the answers to the foregoing questions, the intended curriculum will be developed. (3) Field Testing of the Product. Once the first draft of the curriculum has been developed, it will be given to a class of students who have been pretested on the social studies portion of the High School Equivalency Test. The High School Equivalency test will again be given to students once they complete the developed course curriculum.
(4) Revision of the Product Based on Findings of the Field Test. Pretest and Posttest scores will be compared. Areas of improvement will be noted and the features of the developed curriculum relevant to the these areas will be kept. Areas of minimal or no improvement will be noted and the curriculum relevant to these areas will be changed.
