The Elderly & Community Health Services Programs Ref: Moore (#9108). In order to do all o

This is an excerpt from the paper...

This study sought to identify the types of community health services programs that were being used by elderly persons in rural areas, and to identify barriers to the use of these programs. Three studies were reviewed that examined the use of community health services by elderly persons. This group of studies provided information relevant to the type of services used by elderly persons, factors that may constitute barriers to the use of such services, and appropriate methodologies for the assessment of community health services use patterns.

The Use of Community Health Services by Elderly Persons

Jackson (1990, pp. 167175) examined the use of community health support services by elderly patients subsequent to their discharge from the general medical wards and from the geriatric care wards of acute care hospitals. The objective of this study was to identify differences in the usage of community health support services between elderly patients discharged from general medical wards from those discharged from geriatric care wards. This study was not structured to test an hypothesis. Rather, it was structured to answer a research question. The locus of this study was in an urban area.

A twogroup cluster sample was selected from among (1) elderly patients released from general medical wards of an acute care hospital, and (2) the geriatric care ward of an acute care hospital. The research sample included 50 individuals selected for each clust

Elderly individuals relying almost exclusively on individual physician services were found to use community health services less frequently than elderly individuals receiving their health care services primarily through (1) home health care, (2) through a churchsponsored program, or (3) through a communitybased program sponsored by government. The researcher concluded that churchsponsored programs resulted in a greater level of community health services usage by elderly persons because of the greater individual attention and encouragement provided by such programs to their elderly participants. The study also concluded that relative isolationnon group participationalso tended to result in a lower usage by elderly individuals of community health services programs. With respect to this current study, one of the drawbacks of the Thomas (1990) study was that it did not address community health services usage patterns for elderly persons located in rural areas. A methodological problem with the Thomas (1990) study was that is measured the relative proportions of elderly persons using community health services on the basis of health care serv
