The objective of such instruction, in this context, is to teach college students how to identify and locate appropriate sources for a specific research topic. The purpose of the research study reported in the article was to assess two alternative approaches of providing this type of instruction. In one respect, the title of the article is misleading, because it refers to "term paper counseling." The use of the term "term paper" implies instruction and assistance to students which is more comprehensive than just learning to identify and locate appropriate sources for a research topic, which 1 2is but one function involved in the development of a research paper. Further, the teaching objective of the college class in which this instruction was presented was for students to learn the entire process of researh paper development. In another respect, however, the title of the article was not misleading, because "term paper counseling" is the name applied by the developers of this approach to teaching college students how to identify and locate sources for a research topic. The items included in the data collection instrument, however, did not provide a valid measurement of whether or not a student could effectively and efficiently identify and locate sources for a specific research topic. What the instrument actually measured was student: (1) knowledge of the function of card catalogues, periodical indexes, and encyclopedias; and (2) possession of a rudimentary understanding of how to use each of these resources. The data collection instrument simply did not provide a valid measurement of the effectiveness and efficiency of a student in identifying and locating sources for a specific research topic, although the researchers implied an assumption to this effect.
RESEARCH DESIGN, AND DATA ANALYSIS
The researchers employed an experimental research design, in which different students were exposed to the two approaches to instructionterm paper counseling, and group instruction compared in the research study reported in the article. In the context of the research design, the study provided a sound basis for comparing the relative effectiveness of the two instructional spproaches included in the research study reported in the article.
