Basic Philosophy of Education One of the central features of the modern Americ

One of the central features of the modern American educational systems is that of the actual philosophy of learning, instruction, and evaluation. Some believe that in order for teachers to be at all effective, they must be proficient in testing, and that the very proficiency in testing requires that they are able to adapt and synthesize different skills (Carey, 1988). However, in establishing a basic philosophy of education, it must be remembered that the individual needs of the student are of paramount importance, and that regardless of the theoretical position, for any coherent philosophy to have value, it must be adaptable to a myriad of situations within the pragmatic world.

Even the term "education," elicits philosophical arguments from many quarters. In many situations it is praised, yet in the modern world, it is increasingly blamed for a variety of societal ills, which may or may not be an accurate representation of contemporary society. As a potential educator, though, it is important to note that semantics aside, it is necessary to define and delineate a basic philosophy of instruction. This basic outline, however, should be presented as a living document, continually growing and adapting to the various stimuli that occur within the educational process itself. This paper will address just that issue and will look into the meaning of learning in education, behavior modification, the learning atmosphere, positive teaching strategies, and will conclude with a statement on individualized learning within the educational atmosphere.
